Roadmap for Indian Country
The Healthy Brain Initiative’s (HBI) Road Map for Indian Country is a guide for American Indian and Alaska Native leaders, public health,
and health care staff to learn about dementia and start discussions throughout their communities.
It is time for communities and tribal nations and villages to take action to help people and caregivers living with Alzheimer’s and dementia and help prevent the impact on future generations.
- 1 in 9 people in the US age 65+ has Alzheimer’s disease or other dementias
- 1 in 6 American Indian and Alaska Native people age 45+ report difficulty in thinking or remembering (subject cognitive decline)
- Elders with heart disease, high blood pressure, or diabetes have a much higher risk of developing dementia
- There are steps leaders, communities, and families can take to help and protect their people
The Road Map for Indian Country is a guide that includes eight strategies that embrace community strengths, including traditional practices, resilience, and existing services. The strategies can be tailored to each community.
