In collaboration with the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO) for the Healthy Heart, Healthy Brain campaign, the International Association for Indigenous Aging (IA2) has created a video showing one Native family’s experience with dementia, and how they coped with the challenges of caregiving for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease.
This story introduces us to Thelma Waconda, whose husband Walt developed Alzheimer’s late in life, where she knew something was wrong when Walt started to forget things. Click the video below to hear how she, her nieces, and Walt found joy and laughter where they could.
