Model Project Resources

There have been several projects developed through the National Indigenous Elder Justice Initiative (NIEJI) which will result/have resulted in valuable pieces and data.

Native Elder Maltreatment Pilot Survey

A survey was completed to learn the scope and scale of Elder abuse, neglect, and exploitation in five tribal communities. The data collected will help prevent these behaviors from happening in other communities.

Tribal Elder Abuse Services Survey

This ongoing survey focuses on perceived and available Elder services in tribal communities. Data collected will help inform new programs for Elder justice, and offer needed training and resources.

Tribal Elder Justice Innovation Projects

NIEJI facilitated the Tribal Elder Justice Innovation Grant from 2017-2020. The grant provided 16 subawards to American Indian, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian (AI/AN/NH) to carry out activities to prevent, identify, and address Elder abuse, neglect, or exploitation.

Each community differed in capabilities to report, investigate, and intervene in Elder abuse cases. These awards assisted AI/AN/NH communities to build infrastructure and capacity to develop comprehensive Elder programs in their communities.

Survey Results:

There is very little data about Elder abuse in Indian Country. The funding resulted in increased tribal capacity to report, investigate, and intervene in Elder abuse cases, including the understanding of prevalence of Elder maltreatment in five tribal communities.
