The International Association for Indigenous Aging (IA2) and the University of Illinois Chicago (Health Matters Program) will be holding a talking circle with community members. The purpose of this conversation is to learn more about your experience with and recommendations related to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), brain health, and Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD) in Native communities.

American Indians/Alaska Natives have the highest rate of disability of any racial and ethnic population in the US. 22% of the AI/AN population has one or more disabilities (approx. 550, 000 individuals), which is the highest rate of disabilities when compared with all other races/ethnicities surveyed in the US.

American Indians and Alaska Natives have the second-highest rates of IDD, only surpassed by African Americans. There is little data on the prevalence rate for many specific IDD in the community.
