The International Association for Indigenous Aging (IA2) congratulates the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Alzheimer’s Association, and the many contributing organizations on the release of the Healthy Brain Initiative: State and Local Road Map for Public Health, 2023–2027. As with previous iterations, it serves as a guidebook for state and local public health practitioners and others for addressing brain health in communities. This latest edition of the HBI Road Map, released June 29, 2023, builds on previous experience of public health practitioners and others in advancing equity by fully integrating brain health and caregiving into state, local and tribal public health practice, and addressing social determinants of health across the life course. The “Action Agenda” includes strengthening partnerships and policies; building the workforce; improving data; and educating the public.
The CDC and the Alzheimer’s Association will host a launch webinar, Explore the New HBI Road Map with Experts: Charting the Course to Better Brain Health, on July 26 at 4 pm ET. Learn how to take action, prioritize health equity, and shift policies to promote brain health by registering for this webinar at here. Past editions of the Road Map are available online. The series also includes the Road Map for Indian Country issued in 2019.
The 2019 Healthy Brain Initiative Road Map for Indian Country was the first public health guide focused on dementia in American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) communities. A new version of the Road Map will be issued in 2024 and will employ the guidance of experts and leaders from throughout Indian country to continue to use public health strategies to help AI/AN communities learn about and prepare their responses to Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD).
As the CDC-funded American Indian and Alaska Native Resource Center for Brain Health, IA2 serves as a national hub for ADRD information resources serving Indian country and American Indian and Alaska Native peoples wherever they live. IA2 will continue to support efforts to address ADRD in all communities and throughout Indian country.
IA2 is a national not-for-profit organization dedicated to improving the well-being of indigenous elders throughout the nation. In addition to operating the American Indian and Alaska Native Resource Center for Brain Health, IA2 also hosts the federally funded Native American Elder Justice Initiative National Resource Center, operates a CDC Foundation project to promote influenza and COVID vaccinations among Native Americans and Alaska Natives, among other national initiatives.
